Nurse or Caregiver? Knowing the Difference

Families often ask which one they need. The simple answer: if the care is medical, you need a nurse. If it is help with daily life, a caregiver is the right choice.

Choose a nurse if your loved one needs

  • Injections, IV therapy or medication given
  • Wound care or a dressing changed
  • Care of a catheter, feeding tube, trach or line
  • Close monitoring after surgery or a hospital stay
  • Management of a condition that is changing

Choose a caregiver if they need

  • Help washing, dressing and getting around
  • Someone there so they are safe and not alone
  • Meals, routine and medication reminders
  • Company for walks, outings and appointments
  • Respite for family members who care for them

The best of both

Many families combine a caregiver for daily support with scheduled nurse visits or a Medical Membership. You get nurse oversight at a lower cost than full-time nursing. Not sure? A nurse assessment will recommend the right level of care.
